PSG Defeats Olympique de Marseille in a Shootout to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the season-opening trophy on fourteen different times.

The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time leveler followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable triumph in the match featuring the French league winners and the Coupe de France winners after the French winger opened the scoring early on.

Yet, the southern French side struck twice in the closing moments to take a shock advantage. Initially, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to force the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and the young talent all converted with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 penalty win.

Now 14-time winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the twelfth time in the last 13 years.
