Crew Member Shares Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the deluge of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You all saved me,” she said.
She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the experience, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.
